Geological history and volcanic activity

The geological history of the Caravelle peninsula, on the eastern coast of Martinique, dates back to the Oligocene (-25 million years) with the formation of the basic volcanic conglomerate that constituted the foundation of the geological formations of the island. Thereafter, in the Lower Miocene (-20 million years), powerful coral massifs surmounting the basic conglomerate were built on the edges of the first emerged lands and limestone tuffs outcropped at the level of Anse Chandelier. The volcanic activity continued until some nine million years ago with secondary mineralizations of quartz, calcite, barite, and jasper produced by the fumaroles of hot springs.
