Originally, and until the Second World War, the Comtois horse had a bay coat with black horsehair. It acquired its particular coat with light colored hair thanks to the introduction of the Silver gene by a single stallion called Questeur. It established itself as a breeding stallion in the 1950s and transmitted this dominant gene to the vast majority of Comtois horses. This particular coat is now part of the breed's success.
