Gardians with a standardized outfit

The outfit of the Camargue gardians is a very recent creation. At the beginning of the 20th century, they did not have any specific outfit and wore pants and waistcoats in taupe skin, beige fabric, or even devil skin, strong, tear-proof fabric with small black and white or gray and white checks. In the first half of the 20th century, the Marquis de Baroncelli, promoter of Camargue folklore, imposed amateur gardians a specific costume to give them more unity and allure during traditional festivals. It includes a black velvet jacket, trousers in taupe skin fabric with black piping, a shirt, a belt, a large black felt hat, and a tie. The rider wears leggings of checked woolen cloth that protect him from the morning dew.
