La garceta grande oriental (Ardea alba modesta) es una subespecie de ave pelecaniforme en la familia Ardeidae. Fue descrita por primera vez por el ornitólogo británico John Edward Gray en 1831.
Tiene una amplia distribución en Asia y Oceanía, con poblaciones reproductoras en Pakistán, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladés, Birmania, Tailandia, China, Corea, noreste de Russia, Japón, Indochina, Indonesia, Nueva Guinea, las Islas Salomón, Australia y Nueva Zelanda.
Su dieta incluye vertebrados como peces, ranas, pequeños reptiles, pequeños pájaros y roedores, e invertebrados como insectos, crustáceos y moluscos.
