The forest areas alternating with plots of vines play a fundamental role in wine culture. They stop the strong winds and thus protect the vines. They also provide quality wood for the winegrowers and participate in the drainage of the soils with their roots. The three public woodlands of the Reims Mountain (Chêne à la Vierge, Hautvillers, and Faux de Verzy) obtained the Exceptional Forests label in September 2016.
