From whales to herrings

In the Middle Ages, whales and porpoises frequented the English Channel and the Seine and constituted a godsend for the Normans. By dint of being hunted, whales moved away from the shores of Normandy in the 13th century. Today, herring is the only fish hogging small boat fleets for several days. The English Channel is a migratory corridor for herrings from October to January, then mackerels run along Normandy from west to east.
