The crests of the Puy de Sancy, highest point in the Massif Central with an altitude of 6,187 feet (1,886 metres), offer exceptional panoramic views over the Dordogne valley, which cuts through its Northern flank. Created by erosion, the valley forms a vast amphitheatre as it descends towards the spa town of Le Mont-Dore, then bends Westwards and reaches La Bourboule using fault corridors. The Dordogne basin was classified as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2012.
