Originally, the plains of the south shore of the Gulf of Ajaccio were populated by breeders. Every year, the inhabitants of the villages of Grosseto and Prugna came down from the mountain with their herd to shelter them from the cold in the seaside pastures. This is how Porticcio was born, like several Corsican coastal villages.
