Directly above the Pointe du Hoc, a path runs through bombshell holes and the remains of German blockhouses. The 225 US Rangers sent there on June 6, 1944, were supposed to destroy artillery batteries. When they finally managed to climb the cliffs, the German soldiers had fled, and the concrete casemates were lined with wooden posts imitating cannons. They were positioned a few miles behind and pounded the Rangers forced to wait for reinforcements for three days.
