From the Duchess of Angoulême to Impress Eugénie

Daughter of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, the Duchess of Angoulême (1778-1851) received a diadem from her uncle Louis XVIII. The monarch had it made in 1819 with diamonds from the Crown collections and large emeralds he bought. The diadem was crafted by Christophe-Frédéric and Jacques-Evrard Bapst, jewelers of the Crown. Empress Eugénie de Montijo, known amateur of emerald, later wore it during the Second Empire before it was sold along with the other Crown jewels in 1887. The Louvre's Art Objects department found it in a private collection and bought it back.
