From the De Boug family to the Kaiser

In 1825, the De Boug family sold the ruins and vast forests of the castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg. The estate was bought in 1865 by the city of Sélestat, which mainly wanted control of the woods. In the meantime, the newly created Society for the Conservation of Historical Monuments in Alsace took actions to avoid vandalism and looting of the ruins. It obtained the classification of the castle in 1862 and had some consolidation work done there. Kaiser Wilhelm II finally received it as a welcome gift and began its restoration in 1900.
