From the church to the Pantheon

The architect Jacques-Germain Soufflot (1713-1780) glorified the monarchy of Louis XV by building the Pantheon church. He was inspired by Agrippa’s Pantheon in Rome and built a long neo-classical peristyle. The church is dedicated to St Genevieve and it is built on the mountain bearing the same name. The Revolution transformed it into a monument dedicated to the memory of the great men of the nation. In the 19th century, it was in turn a place of worship and a burial place for the great men of the country. Seventy-four personalities are buried in the Panthéon (2018), including Voltaire, Rousseau, Zola, Pierre and Marie Curie, and Simone Veil.
