From the Ausques to the Vascons

The Ausques, a Gallic people from Aquitaine, occupied the town of Eliberris/Elimberrum (Auch) in the 1st century. The ancient agglomeration of Augusta Auscorum that succeeded them extended below the current city, on the right bank of the Gers. There were found ruins of a forum, a thermal installation, and villas with mosaic floors from the 3rd century. The ancient Gallo-Roman city experienced major invasions such as that of the Vascons in the 6th century. The Roman province became Vasconia, the future Gascony.
