After the bust of Louis XIV made in 1665, the sculptor Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) is in the good graces of the king. The artist suggested that the monarch create a monument to his glory. Louis XIV commissioned him to create an equestrian statue in the style of the one of Constantine I sculpted by Bernini for the Vatican. Made in Rome, the marble statue of Louis XIV was completed in 1677. Transported by boat to Paris, the statue was presented to the king who hated it. Remodeled by François Girardon in the guise of a Roman general, the work remained at Versailles. A lead copy was placed in the Cour Napoléon in 1986.
