The ruins of Haut-Koenigsbourg were classified as a historical monument in 1862. Shortly after, the castle became part of the German territory. In 1919, after World War I, it returned, once again, to France and gained the status of National Palace. After many expectations, it was finally in 1993 that the Haut-Koenigsbourg was listed as a historical monument in its entirety and fully rehabilitated. It is today one of Alsace's most visited monuments.
