The Haut-Koenigsbourg castle is the most famous medieval fortress in Alsace. It was entirely restored in 1900 under German Emperor Wilhelm II in search of legitimacy for his lineage. Overlooking the Alsace plain that extends between the Vosges and the Black Forest, the castle was destroyed by the armies of Sweden in 1633. It remained unoccupied for more than two centuries, and its ruins were listed as a Historic Monument in 1862. After the renovation of the 20th century and the reintegration of Alsace into France, the whole citadel was also classified in 1993.
