Madine Lake is a vast water area extending over 2,718 acres (1,100 ha). It was created in 1971 to ensure continual drinking water supply to Metz and its surroundings. It has since become a refuge for over 250 bird species and was classified as an Important Zone for the Conservation of Birds (ZICO) in 2008. Madine Lake is, for example, known for its black-headed gulls, crested lapwings, ospreys, and hawks. An observatory, integrated into the landscape, allows observing the birds all year long without disturbing them.
