The Arenas of Arles retained their function as a temple of games where gladiators fought until the end of the Roman Empire and even after the city went under Frankish domination in the 550s. At the end of the 6th century, faced with the rise of insecurity, they were transformed into an urban fortress with four towers and incorporated more than two hundred dwellings and two chapels.
