From a temple of games to fortified dwellings

The Arenas of Arles retained their function as a temple of games where gladiators fought until the end of the Roman Empire and even after the city went under Frankish domination in the 550s. At the end of the 6th century, faced with the rise of insecurity, they were transformed into an urban fortress with four towers and incorporated more than two hundred dwellings and two chapels. It was not until the beginning of the 19th century (1825) that the inhabitants, who had even settled in the arcades and the arenas, were expelled. On December 30, 1840, the Archaeological Commission demolished the last houses backing onto the amphitheater, restoring the monument's original appearance.
