The deliberately bubbled glass has made the reputation of the Verrerie de Biot in the Alpes-Maritimes department. Generally regarded as a defect of poorly refined glass characteristic of old glass, the gas bubbles can be deliberately caused by controlling the melting temperature of the glass or by using other methods. The introduction of sodium grains between two layers of glass, for example, produces carbon dioxide inclusions.
