Freiburg im Breisgau is an independent city in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. From 1945 until the founding of the state of Baden-Württemberg on April 25, 1952, Freiburg im Breisgau was the capital of the state of Baden. Currently, Freiburg, located on the Dreisam River, has 230’940 inhabitants (as of December 2020), making it fourth on the list of the largest cities in Baden-Württemberg after Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Mannheim. With the Albert Ludwigs University founded in 1457, Freiburg is one of the classic German university cities. The Schwabentor (also called Obertor in the Middle Ages) on the lefthand side of the photo is the younger of the two still preserved city gates of the medieval city fortifications of Freiburg im Breisgau.
