The head of the cicada is broad, flattened in the front, and provided with two large lateral eyes supplemented by three frontal ocelli. Two thin and short antennae overhang its eyes. The front of the head marks the starting point of a rigid proboscis called the rostrum, more visible from below and in profile. The cicada plants this pointy organ in the roots as a larva and later in the trees to feed.
