Fours à goémons

Goemon ovens or soda pits are hollowed trenches dressed in flat stones at the bottom and sides. They were 5 to 10m long and 50cm wide. Contrary to the photo they were compartmentalized by flat stones. The cut and dried seaweed was burned in the bottom. After cooling the solidified grayish material gave soda loaves used for chemistry and glassware.
