Founded by the Romans, Troyes first bore the Latin name Augustobona. Around 380 AD, the city was renamed after the Tricasses. This Gallic tribe left traces from the 6th and 5th centuries BC in the area. Attila and his hordes of Huns later penetrated France, reaching the plains of Champagne before being driven back. The distant past of Troyes was long obscured by its medieval glory as an essential place of the Champagne fairs.
