The forts of Briançon could withstand sieges of several weeks thanks to the various installations that allowed their autonomy such as bakeries, kitchens, cisterns, food stores, or powder magazines. The lighting was provided by kerosene or rapeseed lamps but also by light wells that could be blocked when the place entered defense mode.
