In Corsica, hundreds of defensive towers were erected during the Genoese era on the shores of the island of beauty. The isolated Gulf of Girolata was one of the most exposed places to the invaders because of its isolation which conferred tranquility and discretion to the enemy ships. To ensure more protection to the bay, a walled enclosure was built on the peninsula in the mid-sixteenth century, housing a square tower and a chapel.
