In Briançon in the Hautes-Alpes department, the topographical restraints of the terrain forced Vauban to stagger the fortifications vertically and create a belt of forts to optimize the defense of the rocky outcrop on which the town stands. The fortification of the heights dominating the city continued until the 20th century. The whole process transformed Briançon into the most important fortified mountain complex in Europe.
