The natural habitat of Hermann's tortoises (Testudo hermanni) is highly threatened by forest fires, the frequency of which strongly impacts the populations. 60 to 85% of individuals die with each passage of fire in a specific area. The slow regeneration of the individuals (around thirty years) leads, in the event of repeated fires on the same site, to the local disappearance of the species. As for the means of prevention (opening of firewalls, clearing), they participate in the fragmentation and degradation of the Chelonians' (shelled reptiles) habitat.
