The American bison is the only animal whose two lungs share a common cavity. In all other animals, the lungs are separate. This means that if hit by an arrow, both lungs would collapse and the buffalo would quickly suffocate. Where other animals have their second lung in lung support. That is why such a large animal can be slaughtered with relatively small weapons.
