The Mourres rocks of Forcalquier were formed in a lacustrine environment about twenty-five million years ago by the stabilization of limestone sediments by seagrass beds. Differential erosion then exposed the structures consolidated by the algae constructions. The necrosis of certain parts of these algal islands also contributed to the variety of forms visible today.
