The Romans left traces in the region of Hauteville-sur-Mer in the Manche department. Its name would come from the Latin Alta Villa, as the village occupied the forest of a dominant plateau. In 1789, it took the name of Hauteville-Près-la-Mer. The growing fashion for seaside resorts and the example of Deauville pushed local elected officials to create a seafront, villas for summer visitors, a pedestrian promenade and a road overlooking it. Hauteville hence moved closer to the sea and became Hauteville-sur-Mer.
