Formed during the Mesozoic Era

The formation of the ochres of the Provençal Colorado of Rustrel in the Vaucluse department took place during the Mesozoic Era (252 to 66 million years ago). Back then, the temperature variations and the increasing acidification of rainwaters degraded certain minerals of the old granitic rocks of the Massif Central. The dissolution of feldspars and micas produced clays, while the liberation and fragmentation of quartz generated siliceous sands.
