A volcano-karstic raised island, Rurutu in the Austral Islands is formed of tuffs, basalts, slags and coral limestones at 492ft (150m) of altitude. Its coastal cliffs, remains of the former barrier reef, form a circular limestone plateau shaped in karst with lapis, sinkholes, pinnacles, avens and numerous caves.
