Formation and stabilization of ice on a lake
1
0
The surface water of a lake turns to ice when it meets an outside atmosphere with a temperature below 32° F (0° C). The formation and stabilization of ice on the surface are due to the dependence of water density on temperature and the greater lightness of solid water. Once formed, the ice thus remains on the surface and constitutes a layer whose thickness depends on the outside temperature and the overall volume of water contained in the lake.
