The Makatea caves are carved into the carbonate rocks of the elevated atoll. The limestone is formed of calcium carbonate crystallized in its calcite form and associated with various impurities. The calcite's solubility increases with the water acidity enhanced by the carbon dioxide of the air and soil. Depending on the environment, these chemical balances are at the origin of both the rock dissolution and the precipitations allowing the concretions.
