Tropical forests - like that of Honduras - are the richest forests in the world in biodiversity because they were not, or only slightly, affected by the last glaciations. They contain at least 92.2% of the animal and plant species living on the planet. At low altitudes, they are characterized by their large number of tree species, the low density of adults of each species and the long distances between the adults of the same species.
