The dry forests of New Caledonia are evergreen sclerophyllous forests composed of leathery plants with thick cuticles. They belong to the seasonal tropical and subtropical evergreen forests of the UNESCO classification. They correspond to closed formations with a dense undergrowth whose cover lets little light through. In the valleys and near the rivers, the vegetation benefits from more favorable growth conditions and gradually transforms into a dense humid forest.
