Jura is the area par excellence for beech and fir forests. From the middle mountain level (around 2,624 ft / 800 m of altitude), the spruce forests form natural or introduced enclaves which extend with altitude depending on the cooling of the climate and the shortening of the vegetation period until they occupy very large areas. As for the very rarely introduced mountain pine, it occupies stations where the soil and the climate are hostile to the development of real high forests (peat bogs, windy and rocky ridges, frozen soils).
