Riquewihr is surrounded by three forests which present a great diversity of trees depending on the height of the slopes where they extend. Around one-quarter of their area is covered by deciduous trees such as oaks, chestnuts, and maples, that give the woods their warm autumn colors. As the height rises, gneiss rocks covered by more than 200 species of moss dot the forest's floor. The highest slopes constitute the domain of spruces and firs. The Ribeauvillé forest is home to some of the highest in Europe.
