The Haut-Rhin department is located in the south of Alsace. Seven forest areas have been identified: the crystalline Vosges, the sub-Vosgian hills, the Alsatian Jura, the Sundgau, the Ill plain, the Rhine valley and the Hardt. Their wooded areas cover 137,500 hectares. Deciduous forests (oak, beech, ash) are omnipresent in the department with 61% of the forest surface. Pectin fir (Abies alba) accounts for 25% of the volume of standing timber and common spruce (Picea abies) for 13%.
