America returns every year to honour their graves; but the 9,387 soldiers buried in the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer (Calvados) can only be silent witnesses. Most died during the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944, as well as in the following months during the Battle of Normandy. In the centre of the cemetery, a multi-denominational Chapel bears this inscription on its roof: ‘These endured all and gave all that justice among nations might prevail and that mankind might enjoy freedom and inherit peace.’
