The Chartreuse de la Verne in Collobrières in the Maures Massif was built on the site of an old abandoned priory that already bore the name of Notre-Dame de la Verne. It was founded in 1170 on the initiative of Pierre Isnard, bishop of Toulon, and Frédol d'Anduse, bishop of Fréjus, on the dividing line between their dioceses that then passed through the middle of the church and the cloister. The two bishops decided to found a monastery under the name of the Virgin and entrusted it to the Order of Carthusians, already present in Montrieux in the diocese of Marseille.
