The founding act of the Hôtel-Dieu of Beaune, dated August 4, 1443, clearly specifies the project of its founder Nicolas Rolin. He wished to provide the city of Beaune with a hospital for the reception, use, and residence of the poor and sick. Built with the funds of the Chancellor of the Duke of Burgundy in recognition of the graces and goods which God had bestowed on him, the facility includes a chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony and built in honor of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. The work of charity was placed under the supervision of the papal see by a brief dated September 8, 1441, in order to free it from the yoke of the bishops of Autun and any other clerical coercion.
