Blinders function when hitching

When harnessing a horse alone, you can choose to do it with or without blinders. The blinders then protect its eyes from the wick of the whip and prevent it from seeing what is going on behind and to the sides. In multiple hitches, the blinders also protect the horse's eyes from the passage of the guides of other horses as well as from the friction of the bits and buckles of the harnesses of the horses which are side by side.
