The English term foal is used in French to refer to a colt or a filly during the year of its birth. It is used until the animal is weaned - around six months - or until December 31 of the year of its birth. The following year, the foal becomes a yearling according to another Anglicism used to designate a young horse in his second year and that has, therefore, already lived beyond a January first.
