New Caledonian flora : an exceptional endemism and biodiversity

Despite an area twenty times smaller than that of mainland France, New Caledonia is home to almost as many terrestrial plant species, i.e. nearly 3,261 species of vascular plants, 76% of which are endemic. This endemism rate ranks it third in the world after Hawaii (89%) and New Zealand (82%). The different types of environment of the Blue River Provincial Park on Grande-Terre are a true sanctuary of this exceptional biodiversity.
