De la familia de las Tamaricaceae, el género Tamarix es un género no muy extenso y con muchas especies que todavía no se han clasificado definitivamente dentro del género. Aceptadas hoy por hoy solo hay 32 especies. A esta planta se la conoce por diferentes nombres como tamarisco, taray ó tamariz entre otras.
Es originario de Europa occidental, concretamente por la zona mediterránea y se extiende por Europa central, hacia el este por la cuenca mediterránea y Reino Unido. El Tamarix gallica tiene flores de tipo hermafroditas y utiliza antófilos para poder polinizar sus flores.
Dependiendo de la variedad en primavera o verano así como en otoño su ramas se cubren por completo de pequeñas flores, en su mayoría de color rosa pálido o blanco agrupadas en mazorcas más o menos densas.
