Se caracteriza por tener hojas flotantes, de color glauco, y con un diámetro de hasta 100cm. Éstas brotan de un rizoma que se encuentra enterrado. Las flores, sin duda su principal atractivo, miden de 16 a 23cm de diámetro, con pétalos cóncavos que adoptan forma oblonga-elíptica, y miden 10 x 3,5cm. Brotan en primavera y verano. Nuestra protagonista es una planta herbácea acuática conocida con los otros nombres comunes de loto sagrado, loto indio o rosa del nilo.
