El lino es una planta cultivada hace tiempo como planta textil y para aprovecharse de sus semillas.
Hoy se puede encontrar como planta naturalizada en algunos lugares secos, ricos en residuos orgánicos. Flores de hasta 3 cm de diámetro, con color azul fuerte reunidas en racimos muy sueltos.
Se conocen detalles de su cultivo y uso para la producción de fibras y aceite en Babilonia, donde la utilizaban los antiguos sumerios y asirios. Entre los restos más antiguos figuran las fibras encontradas en excavaciones egipcias que proceden del año 5000 AC.
