El girasol es una planta de gran tamaño, elegante y recia, que se cultiva alrededor de todo el mundo.
Con un tallo muy fino y una parte superior en forma de sol es muy representativa.
En sus características podemos destacar que es una planta de duración anual, por lo cual crecerá rápidamente, florecerá, dará sus frutos y morirá.
Su flor:
Sus pétalos se asemejan a los rayos solares, ya que son amarillentos y alargados como si irradiase una luz interior, el centro de un tono más apagado y anaranjado/marrón sigue con el símil de nuestro astro.
Por eso se le da ese nombre y por eso su nombre científico es Helianthus annuus, de «Helio«, nombre del al Sol en la antigüedad.
Es curioso ver como en otras culturas, como el náhualt, se le daba un nombre no relacionado con el astro y se le daba un nombre más bélico como «Flor escudo».
