Esta es una planta herbácea, de tallos tiernos, flexibles, muy frondosa, con raíces tuberosas que produce unas de las flores más bonitas y perfectas de la naturaleza.
Aunque es una planta vivaz, en las regiones con climas fríos debe cultivarse como planta anual, sacando y guardando los bulbos cada otoño, para volver a plantarlos en primavera. Su origen, antes de su uso ornamental, es americano, concretamente de Mexico.
Florece sin parar durante todo el verano con unos cuidados básicos.
La Dalia necesita mucha luz y tolera el pleno sol incluso en los climas más cálidos, dado que favorece a que la planta genere una mayor floración.
Sólo requiere de un suelo fértil y bien drenado, y aportaciones regulares de abono para florecer hasta el otoño, conviene además protegerla del fuerte viento.
